How to Transition to a Vegan Diet (Step by Step)

While I would love it if the whole world went vegan overnight, I totally understand that this may not be an option for everyone. Also, some of my clients who have taken a slower approach tended to last with it over time, opposed to those who went “cold-tofurkey.” Choose an approach that works for you and will help you stick with it throughout your lifetime.

Here are just a few options of steps that you can take to make the transition:

  1. Switch out one food item at a time (for example, maybe the first thing that you try is vegan cheese instead of dairy cheese).

  2. Switch out one food category at a time (try starting with dairy, then switch out eggs, then poultry, then red meat, etc.).

  3. Try to “veganize” your favorite recipes (for example, if you love Mac and cheese, give vegan Mac and cheese a try).

  4. Start with one meal category at a time. For the first few weeks, make vegan breakfasts. Then add in vegan lunches. Then dinners, desserts and snacks. Soon all of your meals will be vegan!

  5. Eat vegan meals when dining out. You could even download the app, Happy Cow, to see what vegan, restaurant options are in your area.

Remember to skip the overwhelm and to make it fun! You are doing something that is saving lives, bettering your health and improving the planet. Be proud of yourself for taking this first step. You can do this!
