How to Advocate for the Animals During The Pandemic
/Speaking up for the animals can be challenging. It takes courage, passion and the willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. For me, there is truly not much that I enjoy more that getting out there and speaking to people one on one. I find that when you have a compassionate conversation with a person, speak the truth and show them the footage, they are bound to get on board. As we approach the almost year mark since the pandemic started, I am really missing this type of activism.
However, just because we cannot get out there right now does not mean that we cannot advocate for the animals. There are so many other ways to be an activist and most of them can be done from the safety of your own home. The following are also great ideas for those who do not want to participate in grass roots events.
Here are just a few ideas:
Get clear on your “why” for being vegan. Share your reason with a friend or family member.
Share your vegan story online: post on social media, write a blog, post a video on Youtube/Tik Tok, etc.
When you do go out, wear clothing with a vegan message. This may spark a conversation.
Chalking: write a vegan message on a sidewalk (visit www.veganchalkchallenge.org for ideas).
Host a documentary screening with family, friends, public (of course, while following COVID 19 guidelines). Check the websites of popular documentaries to see how to host a screening.
Visit a local sanctuary and post pictures of the animals on social media. Share the animals’ stories.
Share delicious vegan food with a non-vegan (tip: don’t tell them it’s vegan until after they have eaten it).
Educate yourself on the health, environmental and animal aspects of vegansm.
Post one of the following on social media: cute animal pictures, animal facts, health facts, environmental facts, colorful food pictures, recipes, or graphic videos (respond to comments and questions).
Share a video/picture from another activist on your social media account.
Support vegan restaurants by sharing pictures of their food on social media. Give them rave reviews on Yelp!
Eat at non-vegan restaurants (that have vegan options) and thank them for “having vegan options.” You can even leave a note on the table that says, “I chose to eat here because you offer vegan options. Thank you.”
Contact local grocery stores asking them to offer more vegan products.
Donate to animal sanctuaries.
Sign petitions, contact politicians, lobby.
Use your unique talents and skills to come up with your own ways of advocating! Get creative.
I hope that this list helps. Please remember that the animals and the planet need us. We need to speak up for them as much as possible, whether it is out in public or from the comfort of our homes.
