Let’s Talk About Dairy

Hello everyone,

I hope that you had a wonderful ThanksLIVING!  We had a wonderful holiday and I am trying to get myself back in gear 🙂

Today I wanted to discuss something that is near and dear to my heart, and it’s also something that most people do not know about.  This subject is dairy!

I was vegetarian for years and often ate cheese, whey, ice cream, yogurt, and cottage cheese, all while thinking that I wasn’t contributing to any animals being harmed or killed.  Unfortunately, I was completely wrong.

The dairy industry does a fantastic job at hiding the truth and telling us that it is perfectly okay to be consuming milk from another species.  In fact, we need it for “strong bones” and “it does a body good”.

*Look at these happy cows, surrounded by family, living in green pastures.

Let me give you a quick summary of what actually happens in order for humans to drink cow (or goat) milk.  First, how do you think a cow produces milk?  Just like other animals, she needs to be pregnant!  The farmer will artificially inseminate a female cow on a device that is often referred to as a “rape rack”.  She will be pregnant for 9 months, just like a human, and will give birth to her baby.  As soon as the baby is born, he or she will be ripped away from their mom (they don’t want the babies drinking OUR milk) and the mom will cry in agony for days.  If the baby is a boy, he will be killed for veal.  If the baby is a girl, she will be raised as a dairy cow.  All dairy cows will be considered “spent” at about 4-5 years old and will be killed for beef.

In addition to the animal cruelty, the dairy industry has done an incredible job of hiding the harmful effects of dairy on our health.  Dairy has been linked to certain cancers (including breast and prostate), is full of saturated fat, cholesterol and contains PUS.  It has also been linked to asthma, acne, type 2 diabetes, bloating, constipation, and osteoporosis (you read that right!  Because milk is so acidic, it actually depletes calcium from our bones!!!).  Dairy definitely does NOT do a body good!

So next time you are at the grocery store, instead of reaching for dairy milk, just walk over 5 steps and try some plant based options instead.  No animals had to be killed for them, they are better for your health and they are delicious!

Healing From Allergies, Asthma and Acne With a Vegan Diet…

There are so many benefits to switching to a vegan diet including incredible, health transformations.  For Wellness Wednesdays I want to feature those who have healed from an illness, disease or health issue from simply changing what they were eating.

Today’s Wellness Wednesday Spotlight comes from Kathleen Kastner, my inspiring friend who has been vegan since 2002. Below is her story:

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY SPOTLIGHT

“I’ve been vegan since 2002. I was already vegetarian due to my love for animals and fish. I was having allergies, asthma and acne and was on an inhaler and nasal steroid. My doctor never asked me the four magic words, ” What are you eating?!”

I learned about the book called Diet for a New America by John Robbins and decided to go vegan to see if it would help my health issues, and it worked! Turns out I was allergic to the dairy. My skin cleared up and I got off my allergy and asthma medicine.

Once I learned about the cruelty of the egg, dairy and veal industry I became vegan for ethical reasons. Veganism is my passion and purpose in life: for the health, the animals and the planet!”

Thank you so much Kathleen for sharing your story with us.  If you want to learn more about Kathleen, please visit her Instagram: @Kathleenvegan or check out her Youtube channel.

Did you heal a health issue by switching to a vegan diet?  If so, I would love to feature you!  Please send me a message ❤

How much fiber are you getting and why this is important…

For anyone who has made the transition to being vegan, you know that the question that you get asked most often is, “Where do you get your protein?”  I think instead, people should ask, “Where do you get your fiber?”

Unknown

Fiber is incredibly important to our overall health and longevity.  Not only does it help us feel full after a meal, but it also helps to eliminate unwanted toxins and excess hormones.  The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that, “without adequate fiber, hormones and other chemicals are continuously reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.”  In addition, did you know that fiber has the ability to control cholesterol levels and to clean out the intestines?!  Did you also know that ANIMAL PRODUCTS (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy) CONTAIN NO FIBER???!!!!!!  It’s no wonder that colon cancer and skyrocketing cholesterol levels are so common.

So, where do you get fiber and how much should you be getting daily?

Fiber is found in plant foods including: beans/lentils, soy, vegetables, fruit, and grains.  The recommended amount is 40 grams per day!  Make sure to give your digestive system a few weeks to get used to the change.  Do not add it all in at once 🙂

I hope that helps, and remember next time someone asks you about your protein, make sure to ask them about their fiber :).

The First Step to Going Vegan

I often talk to people who are thinking about going vegan but they have no idea where to start.  It can seem like an overwhelming process to someone who has been consuming meat for their entire life.  But it doesn’t have to be stressful or confusing.

IMG_4380.jpg

I believe that the first step to going vegan is to find your “why”.  This can seem like a simple process, but it is also a crucial one.  Are you considering going vegan to save animals, to reduce climate change, to protect your body from disease, to increase your energy, to improve your skin, to lose weight, to improve your digestion, to align with your morals and spirituality or to save our planet?  The reasons are endless!

So how do you find your “why”?  I highly recommend watching the following documentaries to see what resonates with you the most:

*Forks Over Knives on Netflix  (Health)

*What the Health on Netflix (Health)

*Cowspiracy on Netflix (Environment)

*Food Inc. on Netflix (all encompassing)

*Earthlings on Youtube (Animals)

*Dominion (Animals)

I also recommend visiting a local sanctuary.  Not only will you get to be up close and personal with animals who have been rescued from the animal agriculture industries, but you will also get to hear their stories and to learn about what happens to animals destined to be on our plates.

(Two of my favorite,  local sanctuaries are Farm Animal Refuge and Sale Ranch Sanctuary).  If you aren’t local, there is always Google 🙂

Now that you have your “why” make sure to post it everywhere!  Post pictures of your why around the house, on your computer, on your phone and on your refrigerator.  Changing old habits isn’t always easy and having this reminder will give you constant motivation so that you will stick with the transition to going vegan.

I hope that helps!

If you have already found your “why”, please comment below with your reason. I would love to hear from you!

Dairy is Scary…and Why I am Heartbroken

Hello all,

I had an amazing weekend with a trip to a local farm sanctuary (blog coming soon!) and I met my first cow!!!  She was incredibly smart, docile and was one of the sweetest animals I have ever met.  While hearing her story, the one thing that stuck out most was the fact that she was rescued at just ONE HOUR OLD!  This truly shocked me and led me to do some serious research on the dairy industry.  Here are some of my findings and why I truly think that we should all eliminate dairy from our diets.

***Before I continue, just a note that I have also created a short video for my visual learners out there.  Here is the link if you prefer this to reading the facts:

There are SO many reasons to give up dairy but let’s start with some of the HEALTH reasons:

  • First, no other species drinks milk from another species.  Hmmm……
  • Second, a mama cow produces milk for her baby calf.  The calf drinks this milk in order to grow into a large animal.  A very large animal (a dairy cow can weigh 1,400-1,600 pounds)!  So, what do we think that milk is doing to us?!  It is contributing to weight gain and obesity.
  • In addition, dairy has been linked in numerous studies to an increased risk for certain cancers:  prostate, lung, breast and ovarian.
  • SO GROSS!  When dairy cows are milked over and over, it often causes infections and will create pus.  The FDA actually allows some pus in our milk.  So not only are we drinking antibiotics and hormones, but we are drinking pus and eating coagulated pus (cheese!) 😦
  • While we may enjoy the taste of dairy, we absolutely do not need it for any health reasons.  While the milk industry has us believe that we need it for calcium, we can actually get all of the calcium we need from the same place that our cows get it from: PLANTS!

And now, let’s discuss the ETHICAL reasons:

  • Just like humans, a dairy cow will only produce milk if she is pregnant or has given birth.  Therefore, she is artificially inseminated over and over again for the entirety of her short life (they are often killed at 4-5 years old where normally they can live into their 20’s).  This is done while they are connected to what the industry calls a “rape rack.”
  • Once the mom has given birth, the farmers do not want the babies to drink the milk so the calf is ripped away from his/her mom.  The mom screams in agony for days.
  • If the calf is a boy, he will be killed for veal.  If the calf is a female, she will be sentenced to the same life as her mom.
  • They will all end up being killed and used for meat.

There are so many other reasons not to consume dairy, including its extreme contribution to climate change.  However, that is probably enough fun for today.  If you want to learn more or read the facts yourself please check out the following resources:
